For this post, I'm going to deviate from the norm of talking about my life here in Mexico to speak on a subject I feel strongly about. Many of you probably aren't aware that January is Sanctity of Life month. Therefore I want to share with you a few statistics I came across:

  • Since the Roe vs. Wade decision in 1973 there have been over 43 million abortions in the U.S. alone.
  • On average, women give at least 3 reasons for choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities; about 2/3 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner. Only about 5% of abortions are performed as a result of sexual crimes, health problems, or fetal abnormalities.
  • Worldwide, there are 126,000 abortions performed daily
  • About 43% of American women will have one abortion by the age of 45.

I could get into biblical support for life beginning at conception or facts about prenatal development, but I'm going to use a quote in order to keep this somewhat short:

"Ultimately, abortion is wrong because it is an assault on the person-forming work of God in the womb. This is God at work doing what he alone can do creating a person in his own image. The vast majority of abortions are performed between the seventh and tenth week when the baby is already sucking his thumb, recoiling from pricking, responding to sound. All his organs are present, the brain is functioning, the heart is pumping, the liver is making blood cells, the kidneys are cleaning fluids, and there is a fingerprint. His genetic code is uniquely and unquestionably human. And, if we are willing, he can be seen by ultrasound." ~John Piper

Many of us are passive, thinking it doesn't really concern us. But there are a few things we could do:

  • Pray that parents, doctors, nurses, and our culture would be delivered from the horrible act of performing and supporting abortion. Pray for the millions of women who experience grief and depression as the result of abortions, that they would experience the forgiveness Christ offers.
  • Volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center or donate money to one, be a supporter of adoption.
  • Be informed and speak out with compassion when possible. Today I ran across some photos and a video about abortion that literally made me sick to my stomach. Many people, even women considering abortions, are just uneducated about what is involved in abortion and how horrible it is.
"The root cause of abortion is the failure to be satisfied in God as our supreme love. And, for all the great legal work that needs to be done to protect human life, the greatest work that needs to be done is to spread a passion - a satisfaction for the supremacy of God in all things. That's our calling." ~John Piper
